What to do Follow pages 204-5 in the Handbook, just as carefully as you did for ee and oo. The need to help children become aware of the ‘ar’ sound is just as great as it was before. Many children may not have noticed the sound in their speech, and they need to be fully aware of it while they create the bond with the letters ar. Forming a strong bond between the sound and the letters is particularly important here. The digraphs ee and oo were easier for children because they just had to remember to write the same letter twice. With ar there are two different letters and this makes the task more complicated. There is also the added distraction of the letter name - children may think that the letter-name ‘R’ is what they need. None of these complications need concern you, of course, as with plenty of practice they will both disappear. The need to spend time on this part of the teaching cannot be over-emphasised!
With ‘ar-car’ safely in the new Sounds Book, it is time to move on.
