Notes on teaching the Long Vowels

The Long Vowels can be taught at any time. The Units are designed so that the work on Long Vowels moves straight into the work on Magic 'e'. In this way, the children's knowledge of Long Vowels is broadened, and the Magic 'e' pattern becomes easier to understand.

Looking ahead, the Long Vowels will be needed for the work children will soon be doing on Syllables. It's a good idea to teach the vowels early on, well in advance, so that children are not faced with two new ideas at the same time.

A menu is shown below:

Each of the 5 vowels has a LONG and a SHORT sound. The long and short vowels are practised in pairs. Children then learn to use long vowels for reading.

Children practise the Magic 'e' words for reading.
