Unit 1

This Unit starts right at the beginning, explaining how to teach the letters to children who have not yet learnt them and are unaware of the sounds they represent. The diagnostic Test at the start of the course will have shown which letters children already know and which they need to learn. These are then taught in the way described below. A Check List is provided to keep track of the letters you teach and the subsequent things that need to be done. You'll notice that the method described here is extremely detailed and thorough, leaving nothing to chance. For children who have difficulty with literacy, the careful approach described below is very important.

Pages 25-35 of the Handbook are shown here, together with the relevant teaching materials.

As you glance through the Unit, you'll notice that help is provided in various ways -

  • An overview : the purpose of the Unit is set out briefly at the beginning
  • Getting ready : a list of everything to collect before you start the lesson
  • The underlying theory: the relevant theory is explained, in this case - the importance of developing phoneme awareness as part of one's teaching strategy
  • The terminology : 'multisensory learning' is explained, with tips on ways of achieving this
  • Step-by-step instructions for teaching the letters are provided in a series of simple activities carefully designed to keep children in the learning situation for as long as possible
  • Purpose-made teaching materials can be found in the SoundWorks case and the Copymaster
    book
